The Relevance of Roots
Black Community at Hollins University & How It Changed Me
About Me
Encountering Black Hollins - The Hollins Community
I graduated from Hollins University in 2017 with a degree in English with a concentration in both creative writing and multicultural literature. Until my senior year at Hollins, I believed I was there to learn how to pursue my love of writing. However, questions began to arise that lead me on a journey to not only find the history of enslavement on the campus but also to find my own family and identity.
Truth is, I don’t know how to tell this story without telling you about me. Researching the history of enslavement on the Hollins University campus has changed my life. In so many ways, it has saved me. Our timelines overlap. Present and past are blurred, perhaps even congruent. I am who I am, in part because of those who went before me.
This is our story.
